Venice Heritage Museum Film Festival

Venice, Calif., July 20, 2022 – The Venice Heritage Museum (VHM) is hosting an outdoor film festival at Vice Media (589 Venice Blvd., Venice, Calif. 90291) on Saturday, August 13, 2022 from 7:00-10:00 pm. Tickets on sale HERE. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Venice Heritage Museum project.
 
The VHM team has curated a selection of short films celebrating the city's historic, artistic, and cultural legacy in partnership with Venice Arts, UCLA Film & Television Archive, Venice Institute of Contemporary Art, and Herman Paramount Pathe News. Select clips from the recently launched VHM Oral History Project, featuring Joan Huff (a descendent of one of the first African-American families of Venice) and Boardwalk icon Harry Perry, will be screened in partnership with Why Not Coco? Productions
 
The evening is billed as "a celebration of Venice History and Culture through short form film" and "an epic night under the stars" with concessions for sale, and vendors. Event sponsors include The Empanada Factory, Firestone Walker Brewing Company and Bev.

THE SAVAGES (1967) | UCLA restoration, 25:53
Dubbed “Ghost Town” in 1967, the area of West Venice was then an impoverished African American community. Los Angeles native and UCLA film student, Alan Gorg set out to capture the lives of its inhabitants in their own words. Without adding his own commentary, he allowed the subjects to express themselves, from the hardworking man with his young family to the jobless youth who seek temporary release from their circumstances through drink and parties.

Beginning and intermediate filmmakers explored the theme “social space” by making short documentaries about the Venice Pier. VENICE PIER was made by students ages 14-18 in the Moving Image Intermediate Film Class at Venice Arts during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Made 2016-2017 by the Advanced Film class at Venice Arts, students ages 14-18. VENICE STREETS, a short documentary film about the history of Venice from its founding by Abbot Kinney to current issues of gentrification.
